A real-time account of life among the Earthlings…

One more day, one more step…

by Slack, on November 15th, 2002

So, Wednesday, I found myself at work until 4am. I volunteered to help reimage machines at Spacely. Of course I imagined this would be a much easier task than it turned out to be. See, we have around 1000 machines. It only takes about 20 seconds to begin imaging a machine, so, I figured with three of us, this would go real fast. The problem is you have to do it in blocks of around 20 machines at a time due to bandwidth… Each block took about 30 minutes to complete. Ugh, how frustrating. I left at 4am, and the two other people there stayed! I felt so bad for them.

Also, I’ve decided to relay some of the humor I find at work from day to day. Seeing as how I have an Operations job, I’m often approached by the teeming millions who work there to fix their multitude of computer problems. Every now and then you get a real gem. So, I will share these gems with you as they come. This week’s gem is:

Floortech: Hey, are you Ops?

Me: Uhh, sure. What’s up?

Floortech: Well, can you tell me where the printer out here prints to?

Me: Uhhhh… Well…. What tha hell are you talking about?

It’s The Weekend!

Another week at Spacely comes to an end. I tell ya, having a 4 day schedule is very nice! Many people burn out on this schedule, but I thrive! I hope I can stay on a 4 day schedule for the rest of the time I’m at Spacely.

In 15 minutes my Mom, Uncle Lou, and Aunt Dorothy are going to stop by and we are going to Hidden Valey Inn. Never been there, but it is apparently one of Tucson’s “Treasures”. We’ll see. We didn’t get to spend much time with Dot and Lou, but it was nice to see them for the time we did. I’m sick of working so hard that I have only a sliver of time for family, friends and myself. But, Heidi and I are working ourselves to the bone right now so that we don’t have to later on in life. At least that’s the goal.

Speaking of the goal, so far this month we’ve had orders at TDN everyday! That’s a milestone for our little business. The next step will be to get to a point that sustains ourselves.

Well, everyone just got here, so it’s time to go. :)

Another Day…

by Slack, on November 10th, 2002

Well, not much to report from the wastelands of southern AZ. My cough is drying up finally! It’s only been 2 weeks! Sheesh! I can thank the Rick-ster at work for that one. Heidi is around 2 days behind me dealing with the flu-dragon. This is one terrible bug crawling across the desert. It seems everyone is sick. I’m glad I’m finally getting it over with. Funny thing is the day I caught it (or started to show signs anyway), Spacely announced their annual flu shots.

Speaking of Spacely, I’m at about 50% knowledge I think now. Brian from work says it will take about a month and a half to really feel “comfortable”. So, that puts my little mind at ease. So many things still confuse the snot out of me… Like everything in the server rooms… Ugh…

Many of my comrades from the glory days at Spacely still have yet to find gainful employment. It’s a monster of a job market out there right now. I’m SUPER GLAD I got scooped back up at Spacely. If some of these guys who used to work for me can’t find a job, there is NO way that I would be able to. Hopefully I’m smart enough to keep this job I have now.

There’s snow on the mountain! Not nearly enough to begin boarding season, but a sure sign that we will at least have a season. I’ll be sure to document our exploits this season well. I feel safe enough now to carry a camera with me. Last season the camera would have been in a thousand little bits with all the tumbles I took. Would have made for great pictures however.

Anyhoo, it’s time for bed, and my sleeping pills are kicking in.
