Ok, so VecLinux kinda sucks. Instead of a Slackware-based distribution, I’d say it was a Slackware-hack distortion. Anyhoo, that’s prolly just the newbie in me. Back to Slackware! Oh wait… I lent my friggin CD to Drewberry. :( So, I had to sit here and make a new damn CD. Anyway, back to Slackware… Like I said, I like the name. ;-)
You know, just because you are installing a “bloatware” distro doesn’t mean you have to install all of the “bloat.” By default you’ll get bloat, but you can control which packages are installed. Here is a good primer on installing a slimmed-down Red Hat:

I’ve been through all the distros you have mentioned, and they all, aside from Mandrake, BLOW. However, the best distro around hands down is gentoo my friend :)
