TWINS!!!! (6 weeks)

by Slack, on July 31st, 2003

Twinsat6weeks.jpgSo, the news is in. It’s oficially TWINS!!! So, we decided to post their very first public picture. :) It was one of the most amazing things I’d ever seen. Today we got to see their little hearts beating! The doc said that one of them is smaller than the other. This could mean it is not doing so well, or it could mean that it just didn’t “latch on” till a day later or something. Basically we have to wait and see. We go see the doctor in another two weeks. :) Heidi still has to take those damn progesterone shots.. ewww… But, as of today, we officially have twins, and nothing can bring our spirits down! ;)

Gentoo & Red Hate

by Slack, on July 28th, 2003

So, I just re-read the server setup that I currently use for my hosting. It’s a Virtual Private Server. Basically, that means it’s feels like a private server, but is actually shared on a system containing a few hundred virtual machines… For what I’m doing, that ain’t bad… Buddy of mine is hooking me up with a true private server (for which I’m eternally greatful), running Gentoo (ahhh, Gentoo). Anyway, the server I use now runs Red Hate (YUCK). Linux is Linux basically, but I’ve really got a bad taste in my mouth from Red Hate. So, I’ll be glad when I can start using the Gentoo server. Trick will be learning how to set it up, and get it running virtual domains, etc… Better trick will be finding the time to learn and raise kids! hahahah Ahh the joys of geekdom. :)

Top of the Morning.

by Slack, on July 26th, 2003

So, here I am: awake and energized… Well, awake anyway. I’ve decided that it is time to turn over a new leaf (yes, I know, about time) and get up early before work and have some time to relax before submitting myself to the hell that is working for a living. We’ll see how long this lasts.

Heidi is doing good… That’s a statement which begs qualification, however. She feels “like I ate lots and lots of cheese and dairy, but I didn’t eat much so I know something is wrong.” Also, she’s been getting up every 3 hours or so hungry as a wolf. Also, I’ve already been on my midnight cheeseburger run. So, all things are go for our new addition to the family. Thursday we find out how many more mouths to feed.

Time to get ready for work. (sigh)

BEST NEWS WE COULD GET!

by Slack, on July 17th, 2003

So, today is officially the BEST day of my life yet. :) After all the trials and tribulation that we’ve endured trying to get pregnant, finally, we’re pregnant. We just got the call today, that we are, in fact, as pregnant as it gets. :) Next week we get to find out with how many!? It’ll be 4 at the most, since we implanted 4 healthy embryo. Well, I guess technically they could all split and we could have 8. So 8 at the most! ha! I’m hoping for twins. The doc said that even triplets would be a diamond in the rough considering our odds, etc… So, it’s most likely one bouncing baby boy (I told you it will be a boy). :) We’re not going to find out, however. We’ll leave that for a surprise, but I am hoping hoping hoping for a boy. :) I need a partner in crime, afterall.

Well, anyway, that’s the news for today. I’d write about other stuff, but strangely it doesn’t much matter right now. :)

The Day the Music Died…

by Slack, on July 14th, 2003

So, I decided to upgrade my storage file system from Ext3 to Reiser yesterday. The thought behind this was that Reiser is touted to be a lot more stable than Ext3’s journalling. So, it made sense to go to this new system to protect our important data… You know, music, movies, and the like. :) So, here was the thought process in a play-by-play type fashion:

Let’s see, I have to back up all the data on the storage drive because formatting to a new file system will kill it. Starting backup process… Damn it! Where are all these symlinks coming from and why is the copy job following them? Kill backup job… Delete symlinks. Begin back up job… Double damn it! More symlinks?! Kill back up job… Delete more symlinks. Start back up job… Ok, it’s all backed up. Format the storage drive to new file system. Recopy all data from backup… Check new file system. Everything looks like it is there. Kill backup files… Admire new storage file system. DAMN IT! Where’d all my files go!??!?!

Ok, there it was play by play. As you can see somewhere along the way I was a complete mook and deleted my files…. I still don’t know exactly where I went wrong. But, I’ve ended up with 5 days worth of music lost, and about 6 GBs of movies lost… And to boot, I tried to update my WindowMaker menu system in the text conf file. I did this without backing up the original (the cardinal rule). Well, I horked that up too. So, now my menus are so far from jacked they couldn’t take a bus back to jacked…

As if that wasn’t enough, last night we had a huge storm that blew down a tree in our front yard, and fried our router killing our internet connection. the day before that our recycle bin blew away!!! WTF! lol It’s been an interesting monsoon so far. :)

Here’s to hoping that’s the worst of it… I know it’s not tho.

Ugh…. Upgrades…

by Slack, on July 9th, 2003

So, today I remotely upgraded my server at home from work. It’s not something you really have to “do” with Gentoo; more something you watch. Pretty neat stuff. But, anyway, long story short, when I reboot the server with the new upgrades, it seemed I missed a few things, as I could not ping it anymore. Let me tell ya there is nothing worse that a machine being un pingable after an upgrade. Well, for me anyway. lol Turns out, that I forgot to configure one little conf file which had placed my server on the wrong subnet. Ack! So, looks like me setting up this “practice” server is a damn good thing as it is obvious I need a bit more practice. :) lol
