Last Day

by Slack, on August 15th, 2003

Today is the last day of my vacation. Tomorrow I go back to Spacely and resume my medium-wage, white-collar job. Wonder how long it will take for me to feel like I need another vacation. I’m also a bit worried about the smoking thing at work. I’m lucky that I work alone for 75% of my week, so I don’t have the peer pressure I had back at my other job. But, it’s still tough. So far, so good tho.

About noon I began receiving an onslaught of mailer-daemon messages for an email address at slacksplace.com that did not exist. Seems some jackass from Iowa Telecom (subscriber) decided it would be prudent to spoof an address here and send out the BugBear virus. WONDERFUL! Well, I notified Iowa Telecom about this. Let’s see if they do anything about it.

Pets, and a Nice Vacation

by Slack, on August 10th, 2003

I love our pets to death! Howerver, they still manage to go on living in spite of my attempts. ;) It’s taken awhile for our #1 fraidy cat to take to the new automatic cat box we just got. He decided the floor was a much better place to go when it first arrived. A couple good spankings got him on track tho. NOW, it seems our #1 alley cat has taken it upon himself to re-mark the areas where our other cat decided to mark. Vicious cycle it is. More spankings later, and a new Bissel carpet cleaner I think has finally done the trick. Now, before all your PETA-freaks take the word “spanking” wrong, you should know I love my cats very much, and wouldn’t hurt them for anything in the world. Keep in mind, I care for them much more than I do for PETA-freaks… But, I vow going forward the only pets we will have are droids!

That all said, tomorrow we embark on a nice, well-deserved vacation from it all. We’re going to Sedona to take some time for ourselves. No cats, no beepers, no cell phones, no stress… Also, when we leave it will be the beginning of my journey down the path of quitting smoking AGAIN. I figure it’s a better time than any, since I can’t really smoke on the road trip because of the twins. Not to mention smokers are more and more being systematically rooted out and put down. ;) heh Here we go again. Wish me luck! :)

The Wayback Machine!

by Slack, on August 6th, 2003

Thanks to the Wayback Machine, I was able to recover some of our old posts to the blog from 2001! I thought they had been lost forever! Unfortunately, the Archive area has not yet been fully configured, so these aren’t available in a user friendly fashion. But, they are available in the database, so later once I configure the archive page, they’ll just magically show up. YAY!

NT Domain

by Slack, on August 1st, 2003

So, it’s done. The first stage of converting back over to a network of Windows Clients. I’ll never give up on Linux. I wanted the Windows clients to be able to take advantage of being on an NT Domain. This would help me mostly for work (learning my trade). I had two problems: (1) I couldn’t afford Windows Server 2003, and (2) I am to old to pirate software these days. So, like I say, “If Linux can’t solve your problem, you’ve got the wrong problem. :)” So, I found that through the wonders of the Samba server, you can run a PDC which will fool Windows clients into thinking they are on an NT Domain being served by an actual NT server! lol Gotta love it!

Today I completed my setup, and have my new domain setup complete with roaming profiles, and update scripts pushed from my linux box. :) Linux is truely a beautiful thing. Oh, and my main workstation is of course still Gentoo Linux. :) For those of you interested in setting up a Samba PDC, use the link below. Truely a valueable resource!
