A real-time account of life among the Earthlings…

Leilani and Rhys

by Slack, on December 20th, 2003

Today, my baby girl and baby boy were born. Heidi was 26 weeks and 1 day today, and the babies are quite tiny… All things considered they look great. They are both pink and doing some of the breathing on their own. Their worst problem right now is serious respiration distress which they are receiving meds for and docs say they are responding well.

Heidi had to have a C-Section. We were expecting this, but not quite this early. The surgery went fine, but her anatomy was a bit unexpected according to docs. Noboday can say if this had anything to do with the pre-term birth… Heidi is doing well, and on her way to recovery. She will be staying here at the hospital for at least 4 days…

The babies are beautiful. I know every father says these things, but damnit, I really mean it!! Leilani is tall! She measures 14.5 inches at 2 lbs. Her Apgars are 3-6-8. The Apgar is a score (1-10) of all things in general (color, breathing, etc). The three scores are birth, 5 minutes, 10 minutes (if I remember right). So, with a score of 8, that is damn good, especially for a gal as young as her. Rhys measured 13.5 inches and weighed 2 lbs also. His Apgars are 4-7-7, so also not bad at all. They need all the help they can get. Please help me pray for them and send them positive thoughts. The magic of having these kids has even got an agnostic like me praying…

Lord of the Rings

by Slack, on December 18th, 2003

So, have you seen it? Are you a big enough geek that you went on opening day? Well, I am! It was such a good movie. It was better than the other two movies in my opinion. Very charged movie with all the action scenes — holy crack there was tons of action. So, at the theatre Aragorn was there, Legolas was there, and I think I even saw Gimli. :) I can’t believe people actually dressed up. They even let someone in with a live bow and arrow!

So, I’ve come to the conclusion that wizards in the LOTR world are just a bunch of wuss-dogs. I mean, in the first movie, Gandalf and Sarumon had it out with each other in a wizardly battle. But, in RotK Gandalf shown a bright light to scare away some of the Ring Wraiths and that’s about friggin it. What tha hell? I mean, in Dungeons and Dragons wizards can kick some serious ass. Talk about handy! All in all a great movie that you just can’t miss!

Heidi was unable to go since the movie was 6 days long! She’s a bit bummed out about that. She’ll get to see it when we do our Extended Edition marathon next year! :)

Need a drink…

by Slack, on December 13th, 2003

I sat and tried to put in something witty, and to the point. But instead I will just say, “SHIT!”.

Some days I am reminded of why I smoked, and why I still drink… A day in the life of a Network Man-Slave is tough sometimes…

K-Dawg the Hip-Hop Pupper

So, we went to Drew and Cyn’s tonight. Drew and Heidi finally had their Falafel night. You know, that stupid greek rabbit food. Cyndi and I, being fully evolved meat eaters, decided to have a Pepperoni Sicilian pizza. :) Not very original, but damn tasty. :)

The interesting part of the trip was when we came home. Seems while we were away our puppy Kahlua decided to have a party. We came home to find our previously filled plate of cookies decimated. We found half a plastic plate, and shredded bits of plastic bag… No cookies in sight. Also, seems the pets are tired of watching animal planet. See, we leave Animal Planet on for them when we leave the house — because we are retarted freaks… Anyway, we came home and they were all watching BET…!?

Here’s a pic of our Christmas puppy and her best friend Midnight.

So, I took a personality test today… Here’s the results… Not sure what I think about it… I suppose it’s pretty right on…

Happy…

by Slack, on December 5th, 2003

Ahh, happiness. Today I’m going to write about a few things that make me happy. It’s so rare that I feel like I’m in a good mood I figured I’d write for posterity’s sake. This morning I made shrimp scampi for Heidi and my mom. We had good food, and good company. That makes me happy. I didn’t feel rushed, and everything was very nice.

Today I got a fresh haircut. I love not feeling shaggy. :) Sounds wierd if you know me well, but I really prefer a nice fresh cut head of hair these days. Now, if I could find time to shave everyday, that’d be great…

Good techno/trance/house music. I love club music! :) It fits well with me, and my 5000 MPH thoughts. If I’m not calm, I need a good theme song to help me through the day. When I am feeling calm and centered (doesn’t happen often), I love a good celtic melody.

Feig’s Deli makes me happy. How cool is it to go to a place and say, “Hey, what do you put on your roast beef sandwiches?”

The butcher looks at you like someone shook his etch-a-sketch too hard and replies, “Uh… Roast beef… Just roast beef… If you want any of that fancy stuff like mustard on it, then you can add it yourself.” Now THAT’S my kind of place!

Chinese food is to die for. There’s a little place down the street that serves the freshest chinese food in town. It’s absolutely awesome, and it’s soo cheap. They’re also the only place in town that I know of which makes rice correctly. Good terriaki beef and sticky rice is such a comfort food.

Circle K, a local convenience chain here in the west, just recently began serving Kona coffee. Ahhh caffeinated joy in a mug! You’ve not had coffee until you have that brew. :) Great stuff.

I recently installed Bluefish on my computer to do my web editing. I got frustrated trying to learn how to use vim. Vim is a very advanced editor, but it is very cryptic. I will master it, just not today. It felt good to be back in familiar territory. If anyone can explain to me how to do a perl regexp substitution against many files at once in vim, let me know in email!

Most of all, the twins are doing fine and kicking much. The anticipation I feel about them brings me the most happiness of all. I cannot wait to be a daddy. :) I am so looking forward to this.
