Slack’s Place

A real-time account of life among the Earthlings…

Smooth Sailing

by Slack, on February 16th, 2004

We’re just cruising along. Rhys is doing fine — getting bigger and stronger everyday. Both Heidi and I are catching up a little bit on sleep and sanity — still far from rested or sane, but catching up. I’m learning more and more about Linux and the wonders of programming. In general things are quite well in our little bubble.

The real big news, of course, is with Rhys. Since the last update we find baby boy doing very well. He weighs 4 lbs 6.6 ozs!! His CPAP is gone and he is now just on the canula with an oxygen flow of 160ml. This has gone anywhere from 160ml to 500ml. He started on 750ml, so he’s getting better and better about keeping his sats. The idea is to keep weaning the flow until it is not needed. It’s highly likely he will go home on oxygen, but a proud father can hope, right? He’s on continuous feeds still because he just can’t seem to handle the periodic feeds. That’s ok. The little keike can take as much time as he needs to get goin with that. We’re in no rush. The biggest news of all is he has graduated to a crib. They tell you this and you think, “YAY!! Way to go son!”… Then you think, “Wait! That means he’ll be in the open air… with the germs… with only himself to protect him….” But, all milestones are scary — this is no different. However, a milestone it is, and we’re very happy about it.

Rhys made Heidi bring cookies for all the Aunties (to me their family, and not just nurses) to celebrate reaching 4 lbs. They were pretty much gone right away. :) I’m going to make lumpia for when we finally get to bring him home. I can’t wait until that day.

In other news, work is fine. I just keep plugging along. I keep trying to cram more crap in my head — learning about Windows toward my MCP, learning about Qmail, Apache, and MySQL toward my Open Source skills. I’m absorbing about 5% of what I read… You’d think I’d be able to concentrate better what with there being no drama in my life. ;) lol

With that, I will just pop a bunch of pics of Rhys. :) Not going to bother captioning them. Figure them out for yourself! ;) hehe Nite!!!

Tony says:

Important safety tip: If he does come home while still on the oxygen, just remember not to light up any cigarettes in the general vicinity! Or, you know, just quit smoking. :)

Slack says:

Yeah, I refuse my son to know me as a smoker. There will be no smoking once he is home. Hopefully much sooner than that.

CHARITY FRANCO says:

hi heidi and allen. he is doing so much better, he will be able to come home soon. you guys are great parents. give him a kissa nd a hug for me. love charity

JESSICA says:

I am so excited that things are going well and that you guys are able to breathe a little bit! You two are so steadfast and patient! Rhys is growing like a weed! He is going to be such a strong young man! I can’t wait to be able to hold him and play with him myself! Gonna have to pry Aunt Jessie off of the cutie! He is a sweetie – and all my love to you, Heidi and Allen.

Kathy says:

Wow! Rhys is growing like —not a weed—we try to get rid of those—think of your FAVORITE plant—okay, so they are slower growers—radishes grow fast (even though they’re not my favorites, that’s better than a weed.)
When you bring Rhys over to visit “Lola” remember that Im only 2 doors away and would love to see him.
All three of you remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Stop smoking,Allen—secondhand smoke is just as bad as first hand! And what an incentive you have to stop!
Love you,
Kathy

Stephanie says:

You two sharing news and pictures about Rhys truly is a gift.

Thank You

Mary Jane says:

Hi there,
The little is looking great. Mom thinks that he looks like your Dad. I think that he looks like you! Tkae care.
Love MJ & family

Mary Jane says:

I forgot “guy.” in the first sentence!! OOPS!!

Pat Watson says:

Thank you for the updates! I will take these pictures to church Sunday so the members that have steadfastly prayed for him will see how well he is doing.

Glad Cyn got to hold him, it was a treasured time for her.

Love,
Pat

Mom says:

I’m jealous! I’ve yet to hold my grandson…touched him, I had, but to hold him in my arms would give me the greatest pleasure. Hope that moment comes soon. Will be seeing him tomorrow ….his 2 months’ birthday.

Much love,

Mom
xoxoxo

Cyn says:

Just to clarify, I didn’t hold him, just helped his mom change his diaper and clothes. Just thought I would clear that up so that Lola doesn’t think she got slighted. :) I am looking forward to holding him soon, though!
