So, today was the Preemie Picinic. We were expecting it to be a little shin dig of a few parents and some nurses. Turns out this was the 24th some odd annual picinic. There were TONS of people. So many folks we didn’t know. It was nice to see all the kids running around and being… well… kids… I know that must sound wierd, but deep down I expected to see more kids with CP and other disorders, but come to think of it, I couldn’t find any, and that was a very refreshing observation. All the kids were 100% normal. Rhys had a brain bleed — a grade 3 bleed — and depending on who you talk to that could be horrible, it could be nothing, or it might not be a tell for anything… One of the looming questions about Rhys is Cerebal Palsy, and this picinic raised my spirits about that.
We walked in and one of the first thigns we saw was Ronald McDonald. I’ll never quite be ok seeing a living breathing Ronald McDonald. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I just freak out a little when I see it. Did you know you could save 20% or more on car insurance?

I felt so bad for the poor dude in the Gecko suit! I mean you’d think that it being Fall and everything that it wasn’t bad. Really, it wasn’t bad, if you enjoy living in hell… It was a relaxing 90F on this cool fall day in Arizona. :) Normally you see “mascots” like that and they are jumping around and energetic, etc… This one looked like he just wanted to crawl under a tree and pass out. :) hahaha But, hey, it was for the kids. They all love big funny looking geckos! I mean, come on, who doesn’t!
We got to see two of Rhys’ primary nurses from the NICU, Mary and Wendy! It was so good seeing them and seeing the doctors and everyone who saved my son’s life. Here’s Rhys with one of his primaries, Wendy.

We saw his other primary, Stacy, at the NICU. Somone has to stay on shift at the NICU. We got to see some of the other nurses who had to work instead of going to the picnic.
You fool yourself into thinking the wounds are healed over. Perhaps not fully healed, but at least not fresh any longer. But, you are only fooling yourself. When I looked upon Leilani’s stall at the NICU all the wounds tore open again and you just feel so empty all over agian. It’s even hard to write about… So, I wont…
Anyway, we also got to see some of Rhys’ roommates! Gunnar, Caitlyn and Mason were there along with their parents and it was so good to seem them all and all of them doing well! Here’s some of the moms: Gina, Heidi, and Michelle.

All in all it was a great visit and we are so glad we got to see everyone again. They do this thing every year, and we are for sure not going to miss it. :)
