Site Migrated

by Slack, on October 13th, 2004

Well, the site is fully migrated now, aside from the comments from the old site. I still haven’t figured out an easy way to do that… If anyone out there has any ideas, hit me up… I know I can do a nice little script, but I’d rather not make it from scratch… Anyway… Welcome to the new site, and sorry for the change. I really hope all the “regulars” out there will take the time to make an account and stick around. It really makes my day to see your names in the comments…

Ok, I’m done being sappy and clingy. Time for bed…

The Women in My Life

by Slack, on October 12th, 2004

Ok, so today I decided to write about two of the women in my life – my mom and my wife. Boy, talk about an opening statement to land you in the dog house!

Read On…

Actually, this is more of a quick article about two funny pictures I captured which really says a lot about each of them. We’ll begin with my wife.

I captured this picture late one night after I arrived home from work. We’re both on some pretty evil diets… Well, her’s is evil, mine is just mildly torturous. Needless to say, she’s lost somewhere on the number (I’ve lost count) of 20 lbs on her diet… I’ve lost 6 lbs… Anyway, I find her sitting at the table reaching into a box of unknown to me hippy food… I knew it was hippy food, because the picture on the box looked like it was sand cereal. so, I sit down next to her and notice that the box advertises its contents, and tries to appeal to consumers by exclaiming, “Crunchy Fiber Twigs!”

That’s right! It’s a bowl of sticks! I’m holding one of the “twigs” in the picture.

So of course, Heidi leaps to defend her rabbit food, “It’s good! Taste it!” As I eat the stick, she says, “See? Told ya! Tasts good huh?”

“Uhh… No, it tastes like STICKS!!” I had to try another to be sure… Yep… Sticks… Granted, each one had some honey glaze crap on it — but that just made it taste like sticks covered in honey glaze crap… I will never understand her choice in food… That’s not food! That’s what food eats! :D

FULL DISCLOSURE: The dog will sometimes turn away from the food I eat… Not sure what that says…

Which leaves me with mom… Not to long ago, my uncle came out west for a visit and was so nice to redo my mom’s kitchen. Updated it from the 1970s nightmare that it had been all my life. It looked like an avacado exploded all over the counters and appliances. It was horrid — at least in the year 2000 it was horrid. :) Anyway, she finally gets it updated. that includes new appliances with all the latest bells and whistles. No more knobs and cranks. Everything was push button and made a nice beep or click. :)

So I asked her before I had seen it how she liked it. She loved it! but, I’ll never get over what I found on top of her new state of the art stove when I checked it out, and to this day it is still there. :) This stove has all the nice features — timed cooking being the important one to keep in mind as you gaze on the picture. :)

I tease em, because I love them! :D

Preemie Picnic

by Slack, on October 9th, 2004

So, today was the Preemie Picinic. We were expecting it to be a little shin dig of a few parents and some nurses. Turns out this was the 24th some odd annual picinic. There were TONS of people. So many folks we didn’t know. It was nice to see all the kids running around and being… well… kids… I know that must sound wierd, but deep down I expected to see more kids with CP and other disorders, but come to think of it, I couldn’t find any, and that was a very refreshing observation. All the kids were 100% normal. Rhys had a brain bleed — a grade 3 bleed — and depending on who you talk to that could be horrible, it could be nothing, or it might not be a tell for anything… One of the looming questions about Rhys is Cerebal Palsy, and this picinic raised my spirits about that.

We walked in and one of the first thigns we saw was Ronald McDonald. I’ll never quite be ok seeing a living breathing Ronald McDonald. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I just freak out a little when I see it. Did you know you could save 20% or more on car insurance?

I felt so bad for the poor dude in the Gecko suit! I mean you’d think that it being Fall and everything that it wasn’t bad. Really, it wasn’t bad, if you enjoy living in hell… It was a relaxing 90F on this cool fall day in Arizona. :) Normally you see “mascots” like that and they are jumping around and energetic, etc… This one looked like he just wanted to crawl under a tree and pass out. :) hahaha But, hey, it was for the kids. They all love big funny looking geckos! I mean, come on, who doesn’t!

We got to see two of Rhys’ primary nurses from the NICU, Mary and Wendy! It was so good seeing them and seeing the doctors and everyone who saved my son’s life. Here’s Rhys with one of his primaries, Wendy.
Wendy and Rhys.jpg
We saw his other primary, Stacy, at the NICU. Somone has to stay on shift at the NICU. We got to see some of the other nurses who had to work instead of going to the picnic.

You fool yourself into thinking the wounds are healed over. Perhaps not fully healed, but at least not fresh any longer. But, you are only fooling yourself. When I looked upon Leilani’s stall at the NICU all the wounds tore open again and you just feel so empty all over agian. It’s even hard to write about… So, I wont…

Anyway, we also got to see some of Rhys’ roommates! Gunnar, Caitlyn and Mason were there along with their parents and it was so good to seem them all and all of them doing well! Here’s some of the moms: Gina, Heidi, and Michelle.

All in all it was a great visit and we are so glad we got to see everyone again. They do this thing every year, and we are for sure not going to miss it. :)

Promising…

by Slack, on October 3rd, 2004

So, what’s news today? Usually I come in here and bitch and complain, but I’m actually feeling a bit upbeat at the moment (instead of beatdown), so I figured it would be good to capture the moment.

Rhys is getting more and more fun everyday and becoming quite the character. His friggin hair won’t stop growing!! He’s gonna need a haircut soon. I think we should get it colored like mine! hehehe… But, mom and Lola would scalp me if I did that.

My computer was successfully updated to KDE 3.3 among other things recently, and I think today most of the bugs have been worked out. Everything is sailing along smoothly again on my system. :) I even discovered a nice new WebDev platform! It’s called Quanta Plus. All you linux geeks out there are probably quietly saying, “Duh!”.. Well it’s new to me. I’d been using vim for web work up to now. It’s nice to have an actual IDE again. :)

What else? I’m moving to nights again! Yippie! Actually it shouldn’t be so bad. I thrive at night, and the study time should be nice.

Lastly, I’m still smoke free as of this writing and it feels like I might have it this time. :) Yay!!

OH!@ And I almost forgot, my little Web Development company just received a pretty significant lead. :) I can’t divulge anything at the moment, but suffice it to say I’m very excited about it!
