57 Montreal Top Round Bowl

by Slack, on September 19th, 2006

Ok, so, being the foodie I am I decided I’d write about some of my favorite recipes, or at least some that I use commonly. So, here’s my first. This is not anything to write home about. It’s a variation on one of my quick fix dishes to beat hunger and do so with a bit more healthy results than a Big Mac… Not hugely better, just a bit better. :) You’ll probably also find that I’m a “cook from the hip” kind of guy, so my recipes will likely be lacking precise measurements. So, here we go.

What you need:
* A serving of Top Round or other cheap ghetto meat cut. Remember, a serving is about the size of your fist, unless you wanna end up a Fatty McFatterson.
* Bottle of Heinz 57 Sauce.
* Some Montreal Steak Seasoning.
* Red Pepper Flakes, or some sort of capsaicin containing product.

What to do:
First, grab your favorite stove top cooking vessel. I prefer my small 7″ hand wok. At least I think it is. Remember, I’m not very good with measurements. ;) Anyway, add a splash of your favorite oil. I’d recommend peanut oil for its high smoke point, but if you like EVOO, knock yourself out. Toss in your capsaicin product and let it mingle with the oil for awhile.

While you are infusing your oil with the peppers, cut your steak into bite sizes. Remember, food should be prepared during cooking, not while you are eating! There are exceptions, like cutting into a very nicely prepared piece of Chateau Briand, but this is ghetto cooking here! We’re cooking for speed, and money savings … and to have something a step up from ramen (though ramen is a nice side with this).

Ok, meat’s prepped. Toss it into the oil and agitate. Remember this is cheap meat, so it’s not really going to benefit from cooking it rare, or medium or what have you. Just cook it. If you’re anything like me, the meat’s been sitting in the fridge long enough that you don’t remember when you put it in there, so I repeat, cook it good. ;) Toss in a couple healthy pinches of the Montreal Steak Seasoning (you can yell BAM if you like), and give a good couple dabs of the 57 sauce. Toss to coat.

That’s it. Serve over rice, or ramen in a bowl. :) YAY!

Takes like 2 minutes to prep, 8 minutes to cook. Good times.

Stay tuned for my next recipe. :) ha!
