Geeks Need Exercise Too

by Slack, on July 31st, 2007

So, if there’s one thing that going to Mexico does to you, it’s reminding you that you are a fat ass… I always said I wouldn’t let myself get out of shape and right now at best I’m peeking over the fence into fatland. Time to step up the exercise plan! How the hell I’m gonna do that with a shattered willpower, and barely enough motivation to watch paint dry I don’t know.

I used to exercise on a pretty regular basis and here’s a couple things I learned about exercising:

Exercising at night or after work is about as pointless as teaching a fish to jump rope. Inevitably it will take 3 times the effort to do half the amount of exercise and the results will be less than motivating. So, to curb that issue, I’m going to work out in the morning before work. Yeah. Cuz I’m gonna get up early enough to do that.

Supersets rock! Combining cardio with weight training helps keep the time required down, and the results are better for it. It’s easy to stay motivated — well, it’s easier I should say — when you don’t need to have a separate cardio workout.

The fun exercises just get you in trouble. Every guy thinks of curls, and bench presses when they think of weight training. After all, we love our pecs and our biceps… I mean, I assume that… I haven’t ever had pecs or biceps to test that theory. :) The often ignored exercises like the Rear Delt Cable Pulls are used to balance out the muscle groups. Did you know you can affect your posture by not balancing your workout?

I suppose none of this is news to some of you gym-rats, but for us geeky folks, we’re about as versed in physical exercise as you are at math (just kidding LOL). I guess the whole point of this post is to remind us geeks to (1) workout damn it! and (2) put an effort into researching your workout similar to what you would when you are learning a new .NET class!

So, wish me luck. I’m hoping to be beach worthy by the next Mexico trip! WOOT!

We Miss You Mexico…

by Slack, on July 30th, 2007

Sun, sand, beer, rum, dancing (well, other people danced), and just relaxing in general. Yes, this weekend was fabulous!

We began the morning by dropping the little man off with Lola. What a mixed emotion that is. You are glad to get away from the kid and take a break, but the second you start driving away, you miss him terribly… Uggh..

Then it was off to Frank’s new house to rally the troops before we assault the border. It was a good group of folk this time. We were minus Kevin because he’s a Mexico hater. :-P That’s ok, by the end of the trip I think Heidi was agreeing with him.

So, we assault the border, after the token hot dog in Why of course. The hot dog was fantabulous, btw. It tasted even better after that long ass trip to Why. We were lucky enough to get caught behind to mobile homes being taken to their new homesite in Why… We caught up with them not far from Tucson. Oh my god, good times. We built up quite the caravan while traveling at the blazing speed of about 32 MPH. Oh well, people gotta live I suppose.

The trip to the Princessa is pretty uneventful. We get there, and our rooms are not ready yet… JOY! So, we head over to a family friend of one of our companion’s house (that’s a mouthful). We sit and visit and take in some beers. Talking with this guy (I think his name was Charlie) piqued my interest in Mexican Real-Estate. The only problem is the whole “You Don’t Own the Land” issue… Oh well, cross that bridge when I actually get enough money to play with.

So, our stay at the Princessa was grand. The group was great! We all had a blast. Playa wasn’t a sardine can for once which was nice. Seems there must be a new party crowd hang out now. I’m perfectly fine with that. Though the drinks at Playa still suck ass apparently. They are effective, but not tasty… I tried to explain to the girls that you drink those for the effect, not the taste… Sheesh! Amateurs…

Our trip back to Tucson was eventful, unfortunately. I was lucky enough to be pulled over by the Mexican police. No seatbelt… In a nutshell, the cop was picking on whitey for a bribe. So, we drove home $20 poorer, but the experience was not pleasant for Heidi. Hopefully, it won’t keep her from going back there… Admittedly, it was an unpleasant experience for me as well. As I pondered what Mexican jail would be like…

Oh, well, no harm done, and we are planning a trip for Sept. – Oct. YAY! Chat at you guys later. :)

On Our Way To Mexico!

by Slack, on July 27th, 2007

Well, we’re off for another fun filled trip to Puerto Penasco! I don’t remember how long it’s been since we started going there, but everytime is always nice. It’s always a great time at the Princessa — a good mix of partying, and temperament. I actually like the fact they shut the place down around 10pm. My god, did I just write that!? It seems the fires within have cooled a bit in my old age. :)

We’re on our way right now to drop off the Rhys man with Lola so they can both spend some quality time together — and more importantly Heidi and I can spend some quality time separated from him. :) I love my son, but you know what I say, “All things in moderation — reality included.” I’ll miss him terribly as I always do, but the time away is much needed for Red and I.

So, with that I’ll raise a XX for all of you when I get there! Hope all is well back in the land of the free.

Pay Per Post

by Slack, on July 26th, 2007

Pay Per Post… Lots of polarized opinions flying around about this new opportunity. For the uninformed, Pay Per Post is a way bloggers can monetize their blogs. Basically, people will pay you to talk about their product/service in a neutral/positive light. That’s how I understand it.

Some folks say this destroys your credibility. I disagree. Sure, if you are accepting offers for everything out there under the sun — with no regard to the actual quality and usability of the product, sure, you are then destroying your credibility. But, if you are accepting offers for products/services you would actually use, and you are perfectly honest about what you are saying, then why not get paid? Beats the hell out of giving free plugs.

So, obviously I do agree with the program. I vow to both of my readers ;) that I will always disclose if I am getting paid to post, and I will only accept offers for products or services that I would actually consider, and finally I will always be honest in my review.

Mexico is on the Horizon

by Slack, on July 25th, 2007

The candle burneth at both ends, and I’m about out of wax… There are just not enough hours in the day, and not enough go go juice for me to do everything I want to do. I know, I’m the *ONLY* one with this problem. Hey, Jason, this is when you click on Post A Comment and tell me to stop bitching. :)

Friday begins vacation in Mexico. Just a small weekend trip; our standard fare with Drew and Cyn. A good, quick Rocky Point Recharge is just what the doctor ordered. So, big thanks to Lola for watching the little man and letting Heidi and I have some adult time! It’s a godsend.

To update any of you who are curious, life in the Southwestern Arizona Desert is about the same as it has been for awhile. Lots and lots of work. Tons of irons in the fire, and we’re just waiting to see which one heats up. The Monsoon has finally hit, and it’s hitting pretty hard. We had ten power poles blow down by our house the other day, and took the grid down for most of the day. Fun times.

In other news, rumors have it there was a shooting a couple houses down from us. Yep, a shooting… YAY SLUMS! We’ll find out more at the neighborhood meeting since the local news didn’t seem to care about the story. All I know is half the block was taped off for most of the morning a few weeks ago, and there was what looked to me like a forensics van out there. Makes me glad I purchased that Springfield Armory “alarm system”.
