Tux Is Dragging Me Back In!

by Slack, on September 28th, 2007

I swear, just when I thought I was out, Tux — the Linux penguin — starts pouring the sweet sound of Linux in my ears again…

I’m literally “THIS” close to moving back to Linux, and off of Windows again. I know my wife will be glad to hear that, won’t you honey! Just think! KDE on your laptop! MythTV on our media center! FREEDOM can be ours!!!

One of my co-workers was going on and on about the wonders of Ubuntu, which happens to be the latest distro I worked with. Actually, I worked with Kubuntu since I’m partial to KDE, but it’s all the same. It was neat to see the epiphany in his eyes and it really brought me screaming back to all the reasons I went with Linux years ago.

I do remember the pain, as well. God the pain of Gentoo… Gentoo is a great distro, don’t get me wrong. If you want to learn about Linux, I would HIGHLY recommend using Gentoo first. You will probably install the damn thing 20 times before getting it right, and you may even rip some hair out, but you will learn more about Linux under the hood during your experience than you will with any other distro I’ve used. You won’t realize the advantage of this until it is time to fix your borked Linux box, but it’s a handy experience. So, why not just use Gentoo? Well, it is quite raw, and I don’t really have the time to tweak things so heavily. Ubuntu is a great distro that doesn’t go down the shitty road of RPMs so I’m in!

Now all I have to do is really think this decision over before I commit… God, what a task it will be to go back to Linux…

The Man With the Axe

by Slack, on September 26th, 2007

Picture if you will the following scene which occurred in the dead of the night just before I was going to crash.

I’m outside smoking (yes, I know I need to quit). Out of the corner of my eye, I see some movement on the walkway up to our front door. It’s a spider. Being tired, and on a big of a bug hunt lately, I decide to kill this spider. Ok, this spider is about as big as my hand. Yes, I realize now that this was a tarantula and a good predator to keep around the house, but I wasn’t thinking last night.

So, I run in the garage and grab my African Zulu War Axe. … What? Doesn’t everyone have a Zulu War Axe in their garage? Anyway, I grab the axe, head out into the night to kill my enemy. I totally miss on the first strike, and the second strike severs two of its legs off. The spider quickly scampers away, as I stand there. Hunched over next to a bush. Outside my house. In the middle of the night. Holding a wicked looking axe. And that’s when some dude on a motorcycle decides to drive by my house.

As he slowed down to take in the sight, I wave at him… … With my free hand… Not with the axe.

So, I stumbled on to the following blog post on Su Good Eats. It sounded like a wonderful idea to me, since I’m a fan of Cottage Cheese and Ice Cream. Give it a look and let me know if you try it out! If I ever get around to it, I will report back.

Where o’ Where Have My Projects Gone?

by Slack, on September 18th, 2007

So, here I sit, pondering over the multitude of interesting things going on in my life. Of course, by multitude, I actually mean a starving, sucking void. I don’t think I’ve done a bit of side work in weeks! WEEKS! I’ve come to the conclusion that a bit of Old Daddy Brain is setting in. Before it gets too out of control, I’m thinking I need to resurrect one of my side projects.

The real problem is my energy level. Talk to me right now, and I’m raring to go. Ready to work work work — on something interesting. But, here I sit at work with not one interesting thing to do. I still have to do these things, and for the record, I’m on my lunch break, you clock nazi. So, the natural solution is to work at home, right? But, man, you get home and jump right into playing with your kid and doing other things. Not that that’s a bad thing, it’s just a thing. So, by the time your daily allotment of free time rolls around, you are completely tapped…

Why am I telling you this? Well, of course it’s because I’m the only one who feels this way and I’m trying to share with the world what unique problems I have in my life… Kidding, of course. I’m just at a loss for anything else to write… So there. Hopefully I can find a burst of energy to get some work done. I should start drinking coffee when I get home at night. :)

Diggnation Episode 113 – The Sensitive Episode (LOL, it HAD to be THAT episode)

TWiT.TV

Ok, that’s enough for my first Web Train. Nite nite time… Tomorrow’s POETS day! :)
