Ubuntu!

So, part of my mental reorganization of late found me changing Linux Distros… Again… Details in the cut.
Gentoo is a fine distro. Especially if you are an uber-geek like I thought I was. If you can stand having every other major update bork your system, and having to tweak it back to normal settings for hours, then it’s for you! Personally, I got sick of doing that everytime. I’ve had a bit of an Epiphany: Let your experts be experts. I’ve always echoed this mantra ever since one of my corporate mentors drove it into me day after day. But, I think it really JUST set in. Going forward I’m resolving to not try and be the expert at everything. ;) Thought I’d begin with my OS, since I spend so much time in it.
Enter Ubuntu. It’s a Debian based distro. Debian was always a flavor I respected. I would never go to Red Hat or a Red Hat based distro. I have to say I was wary of going to ANY distro that was “for normal people”. But, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this new distro. It installed in 15 minutes flat, which was a nice change from the 7 or 8 hour install (on a good day) of Gentoo. It was graphical all the way, starting with a nice ncurses interface. It detected all my hardware just fine, and got along fine with my other installed OS that shall remain unnamed.
All in all, I’m quite happy with this new distro and I would reccommend it to anyone who wants to USE Linux without having to tweak it. :) Oh, and for you tweakers, you can still tweak it if you want — you just don’t have to.
I’ve been using Ubuntu for a while now on my laptop (850 MHz IBM Thinkpad) and it works great.
