Tux Is Dragging Me Back In!

by Slack, on September 28th, 2007

I swear, just when I thought I was out, Tux — the Linux penguin — starts pouring the sweet sound of Linux in my ears again…

I’m literally “THIS” close to moving back to Linux, and off of Windows again. I know my wife will be glad to hear that, won’t you honey! Just think! KDE on your laptop! MythTV on our media center! FREEDOM can be ours!!!

One of my co-workers was going on and on about the wonders of Ubuntu, which happens to be the latest distro I worked with. Actually, I worked with Kubuntu since I’m partial to KDE, but it’s all the same. It was neat to see the epiphany in his eyes and it really brought me screaming back to all the reasons I went with Linux years ago.

I do remember the pain, as well. God the pain of Gentoo… Gentoo is a great distro, don’t get me wrong. If you want to learn about Linux, I would HIGHLY recommend using Gentoo first. You will probably install the damn thing 20 times before getting it right, and you may even rip some hair out, but you will learn more about Linux under the hood during your experience than you will with any other distro I’ve used. You won’t realize the advantage of this until it is time to fix your borked Linux box, but it’s a handy experience. So, why not just use Gentoo? Well, it is quite raw, and I don’t really have the time to tweak things so heavily. Ubuntu is a great distro that doesn’t go down the shitty road of RPMs so I’m in!

Now all I have to do is really think this decision over before I commit… God, what a task it will be to go back to Linux…

STOP THE INSANITY!!!!

Dude… take up knitting or some other hobby that has a end! I promise, you will just be a unhappy with a Linus OS as with a Win OS.

Hmmmm… OS2 might be your solution.

Slack says:

Hmmm. I’ve never tried OS/2!! :)

Dude, don’t listen to ‘em. I’m posting this right now from my 850Mhz laptop running good ol’ Ubuntu Linux (6.10 Edgy Eft). It runs great, I rarely need to reboot, and it runs just about everything I need to run. For games and shit, I keep an XP box in the other room. This laptop is my sit-on-the-kitchen-table-use-it-every-day computer. And it does get used, believe you me…. :) Go Tux, don’t be afraid. Keep an XP box around if you need to, or dual boot. No reason to be ashamed. :)

Slack says:

Yeah, I think it’s done… I just miss it way too much. :) And most games run fine in Cedega. :) I’m eager to setup a Myth box for tv!!

Charles says:

My God, I am a geek. I started taking a look around to see what OSes I’m using, and realized I am a full-blown computer nerdie. Check this out:

2 Win XP Pro boxes (2.0 Ghz)
1 Win2K Pro box (1Ghz)
1 Win2K Server (500Mhz)
1 Win98 Laptop (450Mhz)
1 Debian Linux Server (Debian Sarge on a Dell PowerEdge dual 850Mhz, SCSI RAID, etc.)
1 Ubuntu Laptop (IBM ThinkPad 850Mhz)
1 Damn Small Linux Laptop (Compaq Armada 233Mhz)
2 Feather Linux Laptops (Compaq Armadas 233Mhz)
1 G3 Mac w/OSX (800Mhz)
2 Bondi Blue IMACs w. OS 8.9 (233Mhz)
Plus there are four more junker machines in the corner (150-233Mhz) that have or had several versions of Red Hat/Mandrake/Feather/Debian/Win98/BeOS. They probably don’t run any more. Oh, and I have 2 Compaq T1010 thin clients and 2 Capio Boundless II thin clients that I may try to wipe the on-board WinCE and replace with some flavor of Linux.

I need a life. :)
