A real-time account of life among the Earthlings…

Go Go Gadget Catharsis

by Slack, on February 28th, 2008

Long week that seems to have flown by. That never seems to be a good thing for me. Means that towards the end of the week, I’m left spinning, and I don’t really know what happened. Thankfully this type of week is not a “common” thing for me. But, it’s the kind of week I had this week.

Work has been extraordinarily bad this week. Obviously, since I am writing about it. Of course I wont go into detail for a list of reasons (you can quit rolling your eyes, Jason).

So, what to do? Well, a nice camping trip with the boys sounds like a perfect remedy for reality blues. So, that’s what we’re doing this weekend. Turns out Sam is going to settle down with his girl, and his bachelor party will be a camping trip. I can get behind that. So, tomorrow night, I have to get my scotch packed up, get the gun packed up, dig out my paintball markers, find our tent and other campish stuff, and then it’s off to … uhm… somewhere… Guess I should find out where we are going…

Hope everyone has a splended weekend. :)

My Oyster Joke

by Slack, on February 26th, 2008

Well, tonight’s sponsor is a fun one. So, here’s my oyster joke…

Two oysters are sitting in a pot. The heat is cranking up.

One oyster looks at the other and says, “Hey bub, you know, they are going to boil us, and season us with Old Bay or something, and then they are going to plate us and EAT us, right?”

The other oyster jumps a bit and looks shocked as he says, “OH MY GOD!!! A TALKING OYSTER!!!”

(rimshot)

Come on, that wasn’t that bad! Thanks to Gulf Fisheries for a unique opportunity. Head over to their website and check out Gulf oysters! They might even have talking oysters. ;)

Kid Kazoo

Kid Kazoo

Ok gang. My project is ready for people to begin submitting links! The link display should go live next week, but in the meantime we are looking to get a nice collection of kid and parent appropriate links. We’re hoping to build a link aggregation community that caters to kids and parents. It’s something we searched for as new parents, and I’d be willing to bet we are not the only ones. So, if you want to help out in this “Alpha” stage, head over to the Registration page and start submitting links! Both Heidi and I would REALLY appreciate it, and as an Alpha user you’ll have full access to everything even if we start charging for premium content… Though I don’t envision charging for anything.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give us! We also appreciate any comments, or suggestions too! Send em to bothofus@slacksplace.com!

Cheers!

The Quest for Happiness

by Slack, on February 25th, 2008

So, I’m reading a pretty good book. There’s a link there to the left. I had this book on my wish list for some time. It’s one of those self help books that touts something that honestly sounds too good to be true. The idea was someone else would buy it for me and I could take in the information and not feel ripped off when it turned out to be a load of crap.

Well, I heard the author on a recent netcast I listen to. I forget if it was Jumping Monkeys or what. But, he had some neat insights to share on the show. So I decided to give his book a chance, and I just happened to have a Barnes & Noble gift card. :)

Well, so far so good. It’s not a load of crap. The author really has some nice takes on getting things done. Some things I know well, and do. Some things I know well but don’t do. heh. And some things new to me. I’m not going to recount the whole book here, obviously, but I do want to jot down some of my thoughts as they come to me, and perhaps the success or failure I encounter during the exercises. Especially since I’ve decided to take it seriously. What do I have to lose right? They are sometimes called Comfort Challenges, and I think they would make good blog fodder…

So, here are the three things I have on my plate goin forward:

1) Comfort Challenge: Learn to Eye Gaze - For the next 2 days, gaze into the eyes of conversational partners, or just strangers on the street. Don’t break the gaze until they do. The idea is to face your discomfort and thus defeat it. I like the way the author cautions you to blink occasionally so as not to accidentally pick a fight.

2) Comfort Challenge: Learn to Propose - Stop asking for opinions and start proposing solutions. I like to think I’m good at this already. But, I’ll take the challenge and pay more attention to it. 2 days on this one too.

3) Action: Media Fast - Go on a one-week media fast. No newspapers, audio books, or non music radio. No news websites. No television at all, except for one hour of pleasure viewing. No reading books except for this book (LOL) and one hour of fiction pleasure reading. No web surfing unless it is necessary to get work done. The author notes that necessary means necessary, and not nice to have. :) MY BLOGS ARE NECESSARY!!! This one convinced me to take his challenges. This should be good.

4) Comfort Challenge: Get Phone Numbers - The author wants you to go out and get the phone numbers of very attractive members of the opposite sex. Well… I’m thinking I won’t be doing this exercise. No need. I know I could get those numbers. Please! ;) LOL I’m damn cute!!! More importantly, I’m HAPPILY married to a very cute girl!

So, here we go with these exercises. Also, in case you haven’t figured it out, I do recommend this book. It’s an interesting read, and some good info there! I mean, who doesn’t want a 4 hour work week, right?

How Was Your Weekend?

by Slack, on February 24th, 2008

Pretty uneventful weekend in our neck of the woods. The most exciting thing about this weekend was my allergic reaction to my cat… He was being so nice, and acting like he missed me or something. So, I pet him. Just a little. Not even a minute long. Next thing I know my eye starts feeling funny. Before I know it my eye is swelled up so big I can’t open it. I looked like Rocky Balboa after a fight with Mr T. Just for the record, Clartin doesn’t help… I know, why I thought it would I have no idea. Dimetap no worky either. Benadryl finally did the trick. OMG.

Other than that, the other news is Heidi and Rhys are back to school tomorrow. Of course I am back to work tomorrow as well. Hopefully I can make it through the week quickly and quietly. Well, here we go! Let’s see what Monday has to throw at us!
